Aloe suzannae, a slow-growing tree aloe reaching heights of 8 to 12 feet, is native to the dense scrubland of southern Madagascar. With a usually solitary trunk that can grow up to 4 meters tall, this relatively rare species has become more available in cultivation recently. Its rosettes feature numerous narrow, upright, bluish-green leaves, sometimes tinged with pink, measuring 2 to 3 feet in length. The leaves, with inward-turning yellowish teeth, are soft and rubbery, posing no threat. While extremely slow-growing, Aloe suzannae eventually develops into a small tree, with old plants branching out extensively. Flowering is a rare occurrence, typically observed in mature plants aged 20 to 30 years, happening every 3 to 15 years in late winter or early spring. The massive inflorescence, lasting over a month, bears ivory-colored flowers densely covering a stout spike up to 5 feet tall. Unique among its genus, Aloe suzannae boasts fragrant nocturnal flowers, possibly pollinated by bats or small lemurs. Endemic to Madagascar, particularly the dry south and southwest regions, it grows in sandy soil near the coast or among rocks. Critically endangered in the wild, it requires full sun, minimal watering in summer, and well-drained soil, thriving in warm temperate and dry tropical climates. While once considered tender, it has shown resilience to frost down to 25°F. In mild climates, it serves well in landscaping, particularly in hot and dry rock gardens.
